Magnetic Clipboard // Adventures in Bookbinding

    Great video as always many thanks! I have consistently had problems with EVA keeping paper labels stuck to Buckram cloths. I have a range of makes (mainly end of lines etc and sadly I don't know the manufacturers) and had this problem with at least a couple of different ones. Have you experienced this at all and any advice?

    Great video. I love the use of cord to mimic a proper rounded and backed book. A technique I have used when repairing/ converting paperbacks is to make some saw cuts through the spine of the perfect binding and glue in some thin linen threads. Then when i cover that with fraynot it really keeps the binding from falling apart as a lot of perfect bindings are flimsy.

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding 5 днів тому

      I don't remember if I mentioned that the false shoulders come from the famous binder Thomas Harrison. I'm guessing you mean Lumbecking or double-fan binding as Perfect binding is machine binding that isn't worth trying to replicate by hand. I've gone off inserting cord in the spine of Lumbecked books. If the spine is going to be fragile for some reason, such as a thick book I might still do it. Years ago when I did many of these, I eventually had a few very well used books, such as cookbooks, come back to me. Ones I hadn't put cords into the spine were easily cleaned off and rebound. But if I'd inserted cords it was harder to Lumbeck them again without trimming the spine a bit. So I figure without the cord the book might need rebinding sooner if it is heavily used, but the spine edges remain in good condition. But a lot of books never get read and it doesn't matter. That's where I'm at with this. But I might change if someone has strong evidence that it is better.

    Hi. I had to see this video again. I sometimes work with craft paper and the grains are strange in this type of paper. or maybe I am wrong. I have a question: How important is grain direction in boxes made out of board and covered with bookbinding cloth? Because I prefer to cut the materials more in terms of economy instead of grain. Thank you!

    Hi I am bit confused as to where I should be glueing the end papers on this project. At the 10 min mark in the video you seem glueing them onto the 1st and last white (signature) sections. But when you are sewing the text block together, your end papers seem to be glued to the yellow board sections. Which is correct? Or am I missing something in this video? I have tried slowing the vid down, but i am still a bit confused. Thanks 👍👍

    • @DASBookbinding

      Wow, you have a good eye. I made a mistake - working late at night - and tipped the ends to the boards. A senior moment..... I didn't notice until I went to cover the edges of the boards. Since I couldn't cover those board edges like that I did another binding. I'd already done the editing of the sewing section and I forgot to go back and change it to the new video. I realised close to publishing and decided no one would notice. I was wrong:) So, it only maters if you are covering the board edges near the spine, in which case you tip the ends to the first and last sections.

    I enjoy your videos very much. When you did the outside of the boards in buckram, you tipped the sides and ends onto the inside papers. Can't you also leave the edges of the sides as well as the top and bottom inside the slip cover unglued, and then glue and tuck the buckram underneath the paper inside of the case,, then glue the edges of the internal paper over the buckram? I think in some ways, it looks neater. That way, the buckram highlights both the inside and outside papers. I'd like your opinion.

    • @DASBookbinding
      @DASBookbinding 8 днів тому

      Don't completely follow, but I get the idea. Yes, absolutely. There is no bookbinding rule that says a case has to be covered this way and there are plenty of variations that work and look great. Roger Green does something similar (I think very close) to what you describe in his excellent book on boxes.
